Campaigns

If there is an election going on, "campaigns" most likely refers to the election campaigns of our candidates. Between elections, Greens work on the issues in other ways. Between elections, "campaigns" more likely refers to that non-electoral activism. Some of these involve promoting electoral reforms. Others are more policy-oriented.

We are open to working in coalitions with other organizations when we are in substantial agreement on the substance of the issue and the means of promoting it. Well, "open to" does not quite catch the flavor of it - "happy to" is more accurate. If we are working on an issue that appeals to you, feel free to join us in the work without taking out a formal membership in our organization. Of course, we would like you to change your mind on the formal membership, but we are able to keep good relations with people who don't join. (Ralph Nader is still not an actual member of the Green Party.)

Just because we don't now have a local campaign working on an issue does not mean we arre not thinking about it, discussing it, and so on. Our resources are limited, and we have to not work on everything else while we are doing what we can. And since this is not exactly a disciplined organizaton, people end up working on the issues they understand and are interested in. If you believe we ought to be working on other issues compatible with our values and yours, by all means come in and discuss it. Join with us. Show us how. We're open to new ideas and to growth - ours and yours.

Issues on which Metro Detroit Greens members are currently working are:

Instant Runoff Voting

Proportional Representation

Proportional Allocation of Presidential Electors

Opposition to I-375 Extension

Police Violence in Detroit

Low-power FM Broadcasting (Community Radio)

Universal Health Care

Labor for Nader

With any issue, it may well be helpful to know how to successfully write a letter to the editor of a mainstream publication. We have a pretty decent little guide on how to do this.
